The 5th Element of Hip Hop; TRUE SCHOOL HIP HOP.

After the capitalisation of hip hop during the early 1980's, rap music became the only'marketable' element. Graffiti crews, breakdancers and DJ's left to dwell in the underground forced to perfect their styles while forging ahead towards international recognition. Hip Hop now has solid roots in Europe, Australia, Asia and Latin American. It is said that Germany is now the new graffiti capital. Our culture emerged out of New York city during the 70's and 80's and spread to many forms of music including new disco, punk, rock and roll, techno / acid funk, and new musics of the West indies. Today all the elements of Hip Hop are alive and vigorous in spite of the maintstreams neglectfulness. Inner city officials (police / upper class) did its best to stop Hip Hops growth. Block parties, jams and concerts in city parks were regularly broken up by police. (to them Hip Hop culture is the same as gang activism) Breakdance 'battles' were often broken up by police. The artists painting legal murals were still harassed by the police even though they were allowed to paint on specific walls. The govenors of Major cities do their best to stop positive aspects of this culture from expressing itself. In many ways Hip Hop is the only supressed Urban cultures not being allowed to to express themselves without the influence from outsiders. You must remember that Hip Hop's innovators come from everywhere. Black, Asain, White, Latino. Men, Women, dance, etc... Hip Hop's current state is much different from its original vibe. Who needs skills when you can have awesome multi million dollar videos? (later having to pay the record label back their money) Many rappers with commercial deals have destroyed much of what 'real' Hip Hop is (or was) but cannot stop what it can and will be. Breakdancing is alive an well. Many of the original crews (Rock Steady Crew, NYC Breakers) are still around and new crews (like Rock force, Superlordz etc...) have emerged. Breakdancing has become popular among Latino, Asain and Phillipino youth around the world. Graffiti has re-emerged as a popular artform. Currently in its third generation, being expanded into comics and cartoons on TV. November is Hip Hop History month. The third week of May is for Hip Hop appreciation.
