BIO INFORMATION
Matthew Wren, born April 10th 1976, place of birth: Mississauga, Ontario General Hospital. Veronica and Brian Wren parents of Matthew, moved to Canada from the UK in the summer of 1970. Father of Matthew, Brian Wren, introduced his son to all genres of music at an early age and that is when his love of music truly began. Matthew’s mother, Veronica Wren, also has had an effect on the position her son finds himself in currently, due to the fact Veronica shares the same love and desire to write quality material for books in a story format instead of writing rap’s for a hip hop song structure. Matthew’s mother, as well as having the same passion as her son for writing, at one time worked as an Editor for a publishing company in Toronto Ontario.
Matthew Wren goes by the stage name PeachTha5ftTrooper.
1991-- is when he first entered himself in local rap competitions. Commuting to and from these emcee battles on no more than a bicycle proved that he had the drive to be a success in hiphop music at such a young age.
1992-- a break-dancing crew by the name of Stylordz caught PeachTha5ftTrooper’s eye, the sound of Peach on the mic was what caught Trx from Stylordz by the ear. Trx and Peach began to work together as rapper and breakdancer.
1993/94 --PeachTha5ftTrooper was spotted performing with Trx by the A&R of BallyHoo North Records, Chester Bryan, who was more than interested in working and producing a PeachTha5ftTrooper debut album. 10 songs deep into the project is when Trx introduced Peach to Trigga Man who was a hungry rap artist himself. Both of these hiphop emcees, Trigga Man and PeachTha5ftTrooper, decided it would be in their best interest to work together on a two song single to introduce PeachTha5ftTrooper’s album release under BallyHoo North Records in 1995.
Due to the management and artist relationship established within Bally Hoo North Records, both sides came to the conclusion of going their separate ways shortly after the single was released. This inhibited the debut album release of PeathTha5ftTrooper Trigga Man and PeachTha5ftTrooper agreed to persue their solo career’s more effectively by themselves after the departure of such an unqualified management team.
1996 --through to 1997 is when PeachTha5ftTrooper found himself amongst 4 other rap artists in a collective titled NorthSideSound who had planned to write their material for this project in 1998 --then record it for an upcoming release in 1999 under Heresay Entertainment.
1999 --marked the release of NorthSideSound’s first 12 inch single: RhymeLines/Wisdom. There was an 8 song EP which was also released in conjunction with the 12 inch single simultaneously.
2000 -– The Year that would change Matthew Wren’s life forever …
January 9th, 2000, Matthew Wren was involved in a very serious automobile accident and sustained life threatening injuries. He was airlifted to Sunnybroook Hospital and intubated enroute. On arrival at the hospital Matthew was placed in the Intensive Care Unit and put on life support immediately. With a pastor outside Matthew’s hospital room the chances of survival did not look to be going in his favour. Hours on end of reconstructive surgery was performed as well as other operations on almost every part of his body. He lay in a coma for a good month and was diagnosed with a right frontal lobe brain injury as well as fractures to numerous bones in his body. Matthew was discharged from Sunnybrook Hospital 2 months later and is still recovering to this day, 3 years later.
Matthew’s future and goal in the rap music industry didn’t appear to be as bright as it was before his accident, having lost the ability to write rap music, as he used to, made it very frustrating for him to continue. However, with time not of the essence now in Matthew’s life, he dedicated all of his energy and time into rap music with the goal of being able to continue where he left off before the date of January 9th, 2000. One year later in 2001 Matthew was able to write some acceptable material but he knew he still had a long way to go, the writing may have been acceptable but still Matthew was not pleased with how his rap’s sounded to the human ear.
2001 -– Toronto, Ontario’s longest running hiphop radio show on 88.1, PowerMove with Dj X, marked not the comeback of PeachTha5ftTrooper but the introduction to his freestyle rap alias PapaSmurf. Freestyle competitions were held every Saturday at 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon, this was seen as a test for PapaSmurf to see if he was able, as an emcee, to hold his own against local competition from the City of Toronto, Ontario. Successfully, PapaSmurf was able to hold his name high as the Ultimate Freestyle Champion, winning consecutively back to back each week-end for 8 months! PapaSmurf was inducted into the Hall of Fame. This fame was short lived and PapaSmurf was dethroned as champion due to the ending of the PowerMove radio show, Dj X the host/dj of PowerMove took a position as dj/host at the first commercial urban radio programming show in Canada, (Flow 93.5).
2002-- marked the year that PapaSmurf joined forces with a hiphop emcee who moved from Birmingham, England to Ajax, Ontario, TajahBei. PapaSmurf and TajahBei, after recording their first song, titled Same Page, for an upcoming rap group project entitled Aftalife caught the ear of an A&R at SPG Music, Shams Tharani. Aftallife, (PapaSmurf and TajahBei) signed a pressing and distribution deal for a one song single to be released and distributed across Canada. PapaSmurf was still trying to recapture and achieve the rap persona, style and writing ability he’d had at his finger tips before January 9th, 2000. The position PapaSmurf found himself in as part of the rap group Aftalife, just didn’t feel right. The end result was that PapaSmurf and Tajah Bei were no longer on the Same Page.
2003-- PeachTha5ftTrooper returned to Canada’s hiphop scene with his original goal back in mind, to write and perform rap music to the best of his ability, as an art form in hiphop culture. 2003 completed a full 360 degree turn around for PeachTha5ftTrooper, Trigga Man and Trx.
I am led to believe there is a higher power in control of the destiny and fate of these three individuals. It’s too ironic that PeachTha5ftTrooper and Trigga Man, who both encountered a near death experience in the year 2000, have found themselves working with one an other again after they might both have been killed.
2003-- represents the rebirth of PeachTha5ftTrooper …
